Arrival Hall – New homewares & lifestyle shop

I have been trawling Instagram for some design inspiration, and envying the many interior designer feeds. Majority of the feeds are filled with images of  ‘Scandi’ design or more commonly known Scandinavian design. There is something relaxing and peaceful about Scandinavian homewares, it must be the muted colour palette or the soft textures and simple lines that makes me want to bolt under the doona covers and chill in bed all day.

The other day I heard about a new homewares store opening up in a quiet corner of East Perth, I just had to check it out for myself as their instagram feed was inviting me over for a friendly stalk. Why stalk on social media when you can go in a meet the face behind the small biz?

Arrival Hall is the newly renovated real estate space transformed into a delightful shop filled with natural light and gorgeous ‘Scandi’ items. It was my mini-escape to enjoy a bit of retail therapy after work in the city. The Arrival Hall also stocks homewares for children and babies, it was the extra large Miffy light that caught my eye!

I had a quick chat with Lisa, the pharmacist turned shop owner who brought this concept to Perth. Together with her husband, Clement they run this beautiful space. And of course, not forgetting their cute furbaby, Lexie who I got lots of attention from and in return gave her affectionate belly rubs. What a great little assistant. I felt so welcomed in their space (and it is also technically their home, because they live upstairs! How amazing that situation would cut their travel time to work by 100%).

I was pleasantly surprised to see designer Normann Copenhagen dustpan and brush, it was just too good to look at let alone use! Then again, if my cleaning tools looked that chic I would be more motivated to start on the chores… wouldn’t you? If you are in Perth, you will have to drop in and take a look for yourselves. The price range is surprisingly very affordable, and it’s great to know that it shouldn’t cost your whole fortnightly paycheck to achieve a designer looking home.

Small Biz in the Spotlight: Lime Tree Bower

It’s been a crazy month of birthdays, markets and a whole heap of other life moments that have taken me away from my blogging gig. But I am back and ready to go with another Small Biz in the Spotlight post.

I like to share the things from small businesses I come across. The creative owners behind them and the amazing things these guys do to change the world for the better, making it a more interesting place to live. Buying something handmade is like buying a piece of that person’s heart/life/dream. Isn’t that something to ponder about…

Today in the Small Biz Spotlight is Helen from Helarious who is also the creator behind Lime Tree Bower. Helen is a blogger like myself, however unlike me…she is gifted with an enviable talent of growing plants! Helen is quite the ‘green thumb’ artiste, often displaying beautiful photos of her bountiful harvest from her urban apartment balcony garden. Please read on to see what inspires Helen’s start-up:

1. Why did you choose your business name?

I wanted something that was simple, flora-inspired, but with a touch of wanderlust. That’s what my creations are all about and I needed a name that reflected that aesthetic. My boyfriend came up with ‘Lime Tree Bower’, which is the name of a poem by Coleridge. We both felt it fit the bill perfectly.

2. Tell us how you came up with this idea?

Is there a special story behind it? I’ve loved making things with my hands since I was a young kid. It’s a part of me and I haven’t stopped! Last year, I was undecided between trying out a new hobby: terrarium making or woodworking? So my friend put it to an online vote for me… the terrariums came out on top, so that’s how I started. I became obsessed and no wonder – it combines my passions for creating things, design and plants all in one!

3. What were you doing at the time when you first thought of starting up your own business?

I was (and still am) working full time, and I was considering starting something but was a little afraid. Thankfully, a colleague of mine urged me to do it – why not, he said? Encouraged by his feedback, I began first by just putting some photos of the creations on my personal Facebook. I was surprised when friends started asking me to buy some. That helped my confidence and within a few months, I finally opened up shop on Etsy!

4. What do you do in your business?

Everything, Lime Tree Bower is just me! I do everything ranging from growing the succulents in my balcony garden, designing the logo, packaging design, product photography etc. The whole shebang!

5. Do you have a website or online shop?

Yes! https://www.limetreebower.com

6. Where can we buy your products?

Online, on my Etsy store.

7. Where are you located?

Sydney

8. Tell us a bit about yourself, what do you enjoy doing if you are not creating?

I’m an avid balcony gardener – that’s where I source my succulents from that feature in my terrariums! I also run Helarious (www.helario.us), a DIY lifestyle and creative ideas blog – this is where I let my passions run free and I get to play amateurphotographer too! Oh, and I love my sports and #goswans!

9. Where would you like to be 5 years from now?

Oh gosh. I would LOVE to have my products stocked in at least a few stores – either online or brick/mortar, and have my creations featured in store fronts, cafes, some collaborations with other brands… That would be a dream!

10. Do you have any business advice for others wanting to start-up?

Just do it, it’s as easy as that.

Creating something and having it on show to the public is always going to be daunting and make you nervous – but really, what’s the worst that can happen? If you fail, you learn from your mistakes, and it allows you to do better next time!

Small business lessons – how to accept failure and move on

I can’t believe how much time has past by this year, I haven’t even begun to think of plans for 2014. It’s crazy… I have been so busy with my personal life that sadly this blog has been pushed aside. And recently, I mentioned to you on my Facebook Page that things haven’t been fairing so well…my positive outlook mainly. This year, life has thrown me many highs and many lows too. I used to be so good at overlooking the negatives and just moving on.

But sometimes, when you get hit down so many times you start believing in your mind that maybe it’s true…I am a failure. I made these wrong decisions that lead me down this path. Cut a long story short, I was juggling too much on my plate. Which included two businesses, and one didn’t work out. I didn’t want to become a statistic, after all they say ‘more than 50% of start-up businesses fail in their first year’…but it happened and I am reeling from it.

failure

Turn failure into an open door

So I’m not sure what I should do now…I feel a little lost. And my other business which I am most passionate about has been growing steadily this year. I’m just going to keep taking it to the next level and try to forget about my past failures, or at least learn from my mistakes.

I didn’t have any experience in running a business and I knew I wasn’t prepared with all the numbers. I am the creative type, those numbers and paperwork can be such a bore. But I realise how important they are to supporting what I love doing…something I feel passionate about. So if you are thinking of a great business idea, don’t forget to keep up with the numbers…don’t stop analysing, planning, thinking outside of the box and on top of the money.

Because truth be told, creativity is so much more satisfying to the soul! But being money smart and organising your accounts will make the business happen like clockwork.

fail

I feel this picture says it all, being a creative you have to be open to criticism from others and yourself, to be free and not even consider the idea of ‘failure’. The fear of failure I learnt can make you second guess yourself, impact your normal reactions and can kill creativity.

The last 12 months, I have been on questioning myself, who am I and can I do this?  This post was not intended to deter you from pursuing your own dreams, I want you to know that uncertainty and unpreparedness is something you don’t want to have when you start your business. Always been on top of your game and keep the back room running smoothly, or why not hire someone. That way you can keep killin’ it they best way you know how!

You know I always have your back. Don’t ever stop dreaming and don’t give up on your passions!

Have a great weekend
