Repurchased 2013 favourites

In 2013, I discovered a lot about my skincare and make up routine that have seem to stick with me. It surprises me actually, because when I finish one product I tend to try out something else. It is very seldom that I repurchase a beauty product unless it has absolutely blown me off my feet!

So I decided to stay loyal this time, because these products made my skin happy in 2013. And I have gone and repurchased the following two in the Priceline post Christmas sales. Do you remember when they were having 40% off make up and skincare. It was the perfect time to get back these winners.

I’m sure many of those in the beauty blogging world would have come across the Bioderma Sebium makeup remover. This stuff has almost reached cult status. It simple melts the makeup away leaving the skin feeling refreshed and cleansed. Like with most make up removers I feel I have to go through a second cleanse, but this does the job first time every time!

I couldn’t find the exact bottle on the shelves at Priceline so I went with the last of the Bioderma Crealine. And this does the exact same thing, cleanses the skin without the harsh smell of regular perfumed cleansers. This is a large 250 ml bottle too, so I wonder how long will this last me. The little one took me 6 months!

Next, is the Revlon Nearly Naked foundation in Nude. It has SPF 20 and the coverage is light but buildable. This one has stuck with me throughout 2013 and will also be with me through 2014. I found I stopped using my Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24 hour foundation because it was just too heavy and made me break out so I changed to Revlon’s Nearly Naked foundation instead. It has saved my hip pocket and it feels so smooth and comfortable on the skin.

Well…I sure was a good little beauty blogger post Christmas, as I restrained myself from overspending. Sometimes these sales can trick me into buying more than I need. And then they end up at the back of the beauty cabinet! However, these two I definitely will NEED in the new year…can’t see how I will live without them.

Do you have any make up or skin care favourites that you have repurchased? What is it and how many times is your greatest repurchase?

Hope you’re all loving the short working week!

Happy Australia Day!

Happy Australia Day guys and girls! Australians around the world CELEBRATE! This is our most patriotic day of the year, as we bring out the southern cross flags and wave them from the cars we drive, hang it at the windows and don the temporary tattoo. Not to mention throw a BBQ with friends and family, then enjoy the fireworks as the sun goes down.

I shall be doing something a little different on Australia Day and that is getting my youngest baby girl christened. So last night I was frantically making the cupcakes, preparing the sushi rolls and chilling the drinks  for the after-ceremony gathering. And maybe…just maybe the aussie pavlova will make an appearance. What are your plans on Australia Day?

Taking care of ourselves and our families and living a life that is not compromised is the only way to live of course…

Beauty Review: NP Set Essential Brow Set

Last month I attended a make up application workshop run by NP Set Australia, it was held at my local Guardian Pharmacy which was only 5 minutes from home. The night was organised for ladies only, which included nimbles, sushi, drinks and clipboards! Yes, we were there to do our homework and learn some make up application techniques from the NP Set experts.

It went for around 2 hours, which involved a demonstration on how to use the NP products and an introduction to how to turn a day make up look into a  night one. The  group was relatively small, around 15 attendees. And I was quite pleased about how there was a mix of ages ranging from 19 to 80+. It was great because I felt the NP Set catered for everyone. And the NP set ladies were so gracious to provide advice individually at the end of the night. I felt that my questions were being answered based on the areas I wanted to know more about and they helped me to pick the right products for my face.

I left with a few goodies that I purchased on the night, which were a NP Set Essential Brow Set, a pore minimizing primer, a blending brush and eye shadow (duo applicator) brush.

I was mostly intrigued with the Brow Kit, I just want to achieve darker and more prominent brows. There’s something about dark brows, that makes a woman sexy and powerful I say! And so here are some photos of me playing with this NP Set kit.

NP set brows

I really like the packaging of the NP Set. It is clean, white and simple. People often ask what is the difference between the NP set and Napoleon Perdis. Years ago I would buy Napoleon Perdis, but now I find NP Set would suit my lifestyle better. The obvious reason  is the prices and the professional quality. The NP Set would suit those who are interested in applying make up everyday with minimal fuss and want to look great day in and day out. The Napoleon Perdis range (usually found in dark blue packaging) is more suited for those practicing make up or offering professional make up services and it is a bit more expensive too.

NP set brows 2

The NP Set Essential Brow Set includes a duo applicator with slanted brush heads, a set of tweezers and three palettes. The first on the left is a light brown colour (subtle brow), the middle is a darker brown (glam brow) and lastly, the shaping wax.

NP set brows 3

This is me with my ‘naked’ brows. I try to colour in my brows whenever I head out of the house, because I find the natural colour of my eye brows aren’t dark enough…they appear almost grey or silver! It makes me look older than my age and my face also appears more washed out than it already is. They say that a dark and thicker brow can make your face appear slimmer and I really believe that!

First thing to do is to tweeze the shape of your brow. Making sure you don’t tweeze too much, as the hairs on the eyebrow can take longer to grow back and can become less dense. The set comes with a mini tweezer, but I hardly use it, it doesn’t do the job of holding onto the hair very well. But I’ll hang on to it in the case for emergencies only! You can tweeze a rounded or squared shape on the inner corner depending on what you like. I think my natural shape is rounded so I draw on a rounded brow.

I like to mix the two shades of brown together using the applicator brush and tapping off the excess so it doesn’t appear too harsh. Then with gentle stroke I swipe it along the hairs to allow the colour to stick.

If I use only the light brown shade it is too light, and the glam brow is just too dark. I like how they have included the shaping wax, it helps me keep any stray hairs in place and helps to keep the colour intact throughout the day.

NP set brows 5

The finished result looks quite natural, I love how it makes my eyes appear larger! Plus it matches the colour of my hair which is also an important tip. Darker may sound better, but if you have very light or blonde hair you may want to test out the light brown first.

The NP Set Essential Brow Set  has become a staple for me, I use it everyday!

And a set will cost AUD$29.00. You can shop NP set online or at Target, Big W, Guardian Pharmacy stores.

Have you tried NP Set Products before? Does the appearance of your brows worry you?

*This post is not sponsored. I bought the NP Set Essential Brow set myself.

A trip to Maddison Cottage Cafe and Gifts

Last weekend, me and a couple of girlfriends went to try out the Maddison Cottage Cafe and Gifts in Guildford, Perth. We have heard so much about their devonshire tea service that we had to book ourselves in to join in the hype. Actually it was my friend’s idea…and I should have known she was up to something…

maddys 3

We arrived there at 1:30pm on the hottest day of the month, it was around 44 degrees that day! I wasn’t really in the mood for a hot tea but in the end the tea was just the right temperature…warm enough to enjoy with our high tea. Although on top of the tea, the girls at the cafe kept refilling our water jug because we couldn’t stop drinking to keep ourselves hydrated.

A high tea sitting at Maddys Guildford (as it is fondly known) costs around $34 per person. It includes a 3 tier china platter filled with sandwiches, mini quiches, vol au vents, scones with jam and cream, and a choice of sweet delights. We had fruit tart, cherry ripe slice and vanilla buttercream cupcakes. And the grapes were a refreshing touch. The ladies actually prepare the high tea treats the night before, so it is nice and fresh. And everytime you go, it will be a different menu…they prepare the choices differently each time.

The teas they offer are from the T2 range, I chose the ‘Relax’ tea, it just had a nice ring to it!

It was a lovely catch up with the girls, but inside the quaint 1920s styled cottage it can get very hot! Even though they had arranged tall tower fans to blow at us, the air was too warm inside to cool us down and we couldn’t enjoy ourselves completely.

The food was absolutely delicious, I have never had a high tea with such buttery ‘melt-in-your mouth’ quiches and pastries. The sandwiches were very tasty and the scones were generous in size, fluffy and light. As for the butter cream cupcakes, they resembled those baked at home and were full of vanilla flavour!

It was so sad that we had chosen to go on such a hot day. But I’m sure this won’t be our last trip here, next time we’ll have to come during the cooler months! The shop is decorated with flowers, French shabby chic style furniture and walls and corners filled with feminine gifts and homewares for purchase. The cafe is small in size, but would make a perfect place for a small bridal shower, baby shower, hens party and more.

And, actually… before we were allowed to put a bite into our mouths my friend was acting a little strange and incognito, but she suddenly dropped the question on us “Will you be my bridesmaids?”. I was pleasently surprised! And I graciously accepted. The other bridesmaid is also a friend who I have known since we were six years old, so it will be amazing to stand next to these two women who have shaped me and my life, when it comes to the Bali wedding in April. They are more like sisters to me than friends. I can’t wait! Operation Bridesmaid bootcamp to start NOW!

Have you tried the high tea at Maddison’s Cottage? Where is your favourite place to enjoy High Tea ?

Carlos Arevalo Photography Competition

For those who are learning about where I am from, I live in Perth, Western Australia. I really love this part of the world and how the city is building its buzz because of the people who come from far and wide to work and live here. There is just so much to see and do and there are lots of interesting little businesses starting up that is making life so much more easier for the rest of us.

One of many businesses in Perth would be Carlos Arevalo Photography, which is owned by my brother-in-law. He is offering workshops to individuals looking to improve their photography skills. I love photography but I am no means an expert at it. I really admire those who take the time to learn the ins and outs of their camera, and who spends the additional time editing to produce the perfect image. Capturing a moment in time is priceless, but it is even better when the photo is top ‘frame-able’ quality!

Carlos Arevalo Photography Studio

My brother-in-law has thought me a few tips over the years, but I am terrible at remembering skills unless I use it everyday. This workshop is perfect for those who are consider themselves an amateur photographer but would like to take their photography skills to the next level.

Designer in the spotlight: Orla Kiely

Did you have a lovely weekend? These are the days that I wish would go on forever. When I think of the warmth of the sun and the blue clear skies of our Australian Summer, not only do I feel like going outdoors all the time but the luxury of chilling indoors and staring through the window at the natural light that shines in.

Therefore I like to refresh the interior of my home with Summer trends. One designer that would trust my Summer home to would be Orla Kiely.

Orla Keily book

The bold and bright colours would definitely ignite the ‘Summer Love’ within as I enjoy those hot days sipping on an ice tea on the couch, watching the kids play on the rug.

I’m still looking to own my first Orla Kiely piece. There is something about her style that speaks to me. It is retro but it fits in with contemporary decor and plus I find it is very cute and feminine! Especially her stem designs.

Besides the wallpaper, bedding, kitchen ware is on the ‘wishlist’ for the home. Her stationary and home fragrance line pleases me very much…I would mind them sitting in my home office.

If you would like to fulfill your need for Orla Kiely too, you can shop at Orla or from Australian retailers such as and SE10 Gallery. And you can also find the range available at Myers stores online and nation wide.

Do you like Orla Kiely’s home range? What is your home’s style?

The first week of the year has not felt much different from the end of 2013. I have reassessed my goals and looked at it from a realistic point of view.
